Xopenex HFA is a bronchodilator that helps to relieve the symptoms of asthma. It is designed for the treatment or prevention of bronchospasm in people with reversible obstructive airway disease, and to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm in patients aged 4 years and older. Xopenex HFA contains the active ingredient levalbuterol tartrate, which is known to provide relief from asthma symptoms with fewer side effects compared to similar medications.

Why Choose Xopenex HFA (Levalbuterol Tartrate)?

  • Quick Relief: Begins working within minutes to help relieve wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath.
  • Targeted Action: Acts specifically on beta2-adrenergic receptors in the lungs, resulting in relaxed bronchial muscles.
  • Reduced Side Effects: Typically offers a lower risk of certain side effects such as palpitations, muscle tremors, and nervousness.

How to Use Xopenex HFA (Levalbuterol Tartrate)?

  • Check the Inhaler: Ensure that the inhaler is clean and free of debris. If it is new or hasn’t been used in a while, it may need to be primed. To prime, shake the inhaler well and release four test sprays into the air, away from your face.
  • Shake Well: Before each use, shake the inhaler well for at least 5 seconds. This helps mix the medication evenly.
  • Remove the Cap: Take off the mouthpiece cover. Check the mouthpiece for dirt or other objects.
  • Exhale Fully: Before placing the inhaler in your mouth, breathe out fully to empty your lungs. This helps create more space for the medication.
  • Position the Inhaler: Hold the inhaler with the mouthpiece at the bottom, placing it between your lips and closing your lips around it. Aim the spray directly into your lungs, not at the roof of your mouth.
  • Inhale Slowly and Deeply: As you start to breathe in slowly through your mouth, press down on the top of the canister to release a dose of levalbuterol. Continue to breathe in slowly and as deeply as you can.
  • Hold Your Breath: After inhaling the medication, hold your breath for about 10 seconds, or as long as is comfortable. This allows the medication to settle in your lungs.
  • Exhale Slowly: Breathe out slowly and gently.
  • Wait Between Puffs: If your doctor has prescribed more than one puff per dose, wait about 1 minute before taking the second puff. Shake the inhaler again before each puff.
  • Replace the Cap: Put the mouthpiece cover back on the inhaler after use to keep it clean.

Important Safety Information about Xopenex HFA

  • Always follow the specific instructions provided by your doctor or respiratory therapist.
  • Keep track of the number of doses used and discard the inhaler after the labeled number of doses has been used, even if it feels like there is still medication left.
  • Monitor your asthma symptoms and consult with your healthcare provider if your symptoms do not improve or if you feel that your asthma medications are not working as well.
